Low-Income Households Hit Hardest in Northern Virginia

The median household income in Northern Virginia in 2010 was $98,747. That’s 60 percent higher than the statewide median. But between 2007-2010 it fell almost 4 percent, and even after the recession’s official end in 2009, median household income in Northern Virginia continued to drop. Though household incomes across the distribution took a hit, the recession hit low-income households hardest:

At the low end of the income distribution, median household income lost over 10.5 percent in real terms between 2007 and 2010, three-times as much as those at the top end of the income distribution, who lost just over 3 percent. (From Under Pressure: The State of Working Northern Virginia)
