History of Labor in Virginia: An Interactive Timeline and Map

Whether we are Black or white, young or old, from Abingdon or Arlington, people in Virginia work hard for their families and their future. Everyone deserves safe jobs, family-sustaining wages, and time to spend with their loved ones. But far too many people in Virginia are still living paycheck-to-paycheck while greedy corporations divide them, hoping that Virginians will look the other way while they steal the profits from their hard work.

By joining together in a union and putting power in workers’ hands, working people in Virginia can make sure that every one of us can care for our families, earn a fair return on our work, and make our voices heard and our rights respected. When workers can bargain together, we can win safer workplaces, higher wages, and better benefits for all our families — particularly for people who have been most harmed by the status quo.

The commonwealth has a strong history of labor organizing by working Virginians as well as a history of significant labor suppression by those in power. From the mines of Southwest Virginia, to shipyards in Newport News, to Starbucks workers in Leesburg, to hospitals in Charlottesville, to textile factories in Danville, and more, workers have organized for the right to stick together and improve working conditions. This map seeks to illuminate the history of labor organizing, and serve as a record of its future, across communities in Virginia.

Do you know of an event that should be included?

If you know of a labor history event from your own community that you would like to submit for possible inclusion, please reach out to Mel Borja, TCI’s Worker Power Policy Analyst (mel@thecommonwealthinstitute.org), and include source materials whenever possible.

Acknowledgments

We thank Fowota Mortoo, a TCI summer 2022 intern, for spearheading this interactive map, and labor advocates and organizations who have shared their stories with us.
