How the Senate’s February Budget Proposal Helps Schools Across the Commonwealth

In February 2023, the House and Senate of Virginia proposed budgets that represented contrasting visions for Virginia. The House followed Gov. Youngkin’s lead by proposing tax cuts that cater most to corporations and high-income households.

The Senate rejected the expensive tax cuts, freeing up resources for significant investments in education —  an appropriate and necessary response to a long history of underfunding education in Virginia and a pandemic that disrupted learning and created new challenges for educators. If the Senate’s proposals are adopted, it will be a leap forward toward quality schools for all.

The one-pagers below show how much more the Senate’s February budget would invest in each division compared to the budget passed by the House in February 2023.
